The Team at Medical Detection Dogs trains dogs to save lives
The Team category for the Naturo Superdog Awards is packed to the brim with heroic charities and groups of individuals making a substantial difference to the lives of dogs and their companions, but there are also exceptional teams working with dogs to improve the lives of us humans! The team at Medical Detection Dogs have been nominated for their work training dogs to detect the odour of human disease with the aim of developing faster, more efficient and less invasive diagnostics that lead to better patient outcomes.
They are at the forefront of the research into the fight against cancer and other life-threatening diseases, including Parkinson’s disease, bacterial infections and most recently managing to train their dogs to identify the brand new virus, Covid-19. Their Bio Detection Dogs are trained to find the odour of those diseases in samples such as urine, breath and sweat and our work has the potential to benefit millions.
They also apply what we know about the science of canine olfaction to benefit people by training Medical Alert Assistance Dogs to detect minute changes in an individual’s personal odour triggered by their disease and alert them to an impending medical event, helping them manage complex, life-threatening medical conditions and improving their quality of life. The Naturo Superdog Awards have countless examples of owners whose lives have been transformed thanks to these incredible dogs.
The team at Medical Detection Dogs takes the welfare of their dogs extremely seriously. From the moment they welcome their puppies into the fold they ensure the highest standards of care for their dogs. They have a strict no kennel policy and all their dogs live in the homes of our staff or fantastic local volunteers where they are loved and cared for as part of the family.
They rely on the generosity of their supporters, charitable trusts and members of the public to fund their life-saving work. Deborah Meaden, infamous Dragon and well-known animal lover is a leader in the pack driving awareness for this wonderful charity and we wish the team at Medical Detection Dogs lots of luck in the Naturo Superdog Awards!
